C. Joseph Vijay

Biography

C. Joseph Vijay is the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and founder-leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which he launched in 2024 after a long career as a Tamil film actor. In the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, TVK's entry ended a dominance of Dravidian parties (DMK and AIADMK) in the state that had lasted since 1967, winning the largest single-party seat share though falling short of a majority on its own.

He contested and won two seats, Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East, as is permitted (though not required to be retained) under Indian election law; one must be vacated within six months, triggering a by-election in the seat he gives up. He was sworn in as Chief Minister on 10 May 2026, forming a coalition government with the Indian National Congress, the Indian Union Muslim League and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, with outside support from the Left parties, to secure a working majority.
